When we’re not invited to record our stories, those firsthand remembrances vanish like breath on a mirror. Taking the time to record your memories, or even helping someone special to document theirs, is an act of gratitude that honors and preserves legacy. It need not be time consuming, comprehensive, or perfect, nor is it the prerogative of the wealthy, well-known, or powerful. Legacy belongs to each of us, and we can take small, simple steps to preserve it.
Documenting firsthand memories can be as simple as taking just an hour to have a conversation and record what is said. Many people use Five Wishes as a legacy document, by recording their memoirs in Wish 5: “What I Want My Loved Ones To Know.” The answer can span a paragraph, pages, or even a collection of journal entries composed over time. If you want to go a step further, you can create a fully fledged legacy story by sitting down with a loved one with a list of questions and a smartphone. We've provided some sample questions to give you a head start; use them as they are, or write your own!
