Aging Population Requires ‘Bold Leadership’ to Protect Human Dignity

Senior living president writes House Speaker Johnson
December 20th, 2023

In an open letter, LeadingAge President and CEO Katie Smith Sloan wrote U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, telling him the growing population of older adults requires “bold leadership” to ensure aging with dignity, as well as access to care and support.  LeadingAge represents hundreds of primarily non-profit senior living locations, such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  Chief among her concerns is the staffing shortage afflicting all senior care centers.  “Ensuring that older adults are not aging into poverty, that hard-working caregivers are compensated fairly, and ensuring older adults receive dignified care are American values,” Sloan wrote. “Our country needs decisive and bold action from principled, mission-driven leaders, like you, to shape policies that are worthy of the elders who have built our country.”
