Has Artificial Intelligence Become ‘Sentient’?

Google’s LaMDA AI system says it has consciousness. Should we believe it?

The Google engineer thinks LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) a system that develops chatbots (AI robots designed to chat with humans) has achieved “sentience.”  Sentience, as usually understood, is the capacity to experience feelings and sensations.  Has AI achieved this, as he claims?  The question raises other questions about the nature of sentience, sapience (wisdom) and true human feelings.  The engineer has been suspended for making this claim, but the matter is far from resolved.
