Hoosier Health Care Heroes

It took ten years, but a coalition of doctors and patients helped change Indiana law.

More than ten years ago, Aging with Dignity founder Jim Towey spoke to a group of doctors at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.  He told of how Indiana law made it needlessly difficult for families to plan ahead of a serious illness.  In the audience that day was Indiana University professor of nursing Susan Hickman, who was inspired to change the law.  She and others formed the Indiana Patient Preferences Coalition, and over the next ten years, helped educate state legislators about the need for change.  This year, reform legislation passed unanimously.
