How to Speak to Someone with Dementia

Taking the right approach to communication can make a world of difference

Reporter Fiona Cowood writes about Gayle Henry, RN, a senior dementia consultant who has spent her career working with dementia patients.  She has seven tips for speaking and communicating with someone who has dementia.  Henry says there is one thing you should never do.  “We have to treat people with dignity and respect and never infantilize or talk down to them, because that can quickly make someone with dementia feel worthless.”  Henry says the key “is to look at the person in front of you and tailor your next move to what they need right now.  It’s not easy, but in that moment, it will make the world of difference.”
