May Legislative Updates

Delaware

On May 20th, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer signed HB 140 into law, making Delaware the 11th state and 12th US jurisdiction to legalize physician-assisted suicide. This law will go into effect on January 1, 2026.

Nevada

Nevada Assembly Bill 346 died after no further action was taken on the bill in the Senate Committee. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo had previously stated that if the bill made it all the way to his desk he would veto it, which played a large role in the bill’s failure.

Illinois

After adding it as an amendment to SB 1950, also known as the “Sanitary Food Preparation” bill, the Illinois House passed their assisted suicide bill. However, once in the Illinois Senate, it received no further action. This is a big win for end-of-life care in Illinois!

New York

After the New York Assembly passed their assisted suicide bill (A136/S138) at the end of April, it was then moved to the state senate where it awaits further action. The New York Senate has until June 12 of this year (the end of the New York legislative session) to vote on this bill.
